Please read through the following information before completing the proposal form:

Proposal Process

  • All initial proposals will be reviewed by the Exhibits Steering Committee
  • Preference will be given to proposals that:
    • highlight Libraries’ services and/or collections
    • are interdisciplinary in nature
    • have a strong development appeal
    • present a compelling topic that has broad appeal to the campus and community
    • align with mission, values, and/or strategic vision of the Libraries
  • Promising proposals will be moved forward for further consideration, at which time you may be asked to provide additional and more in-depth information about your proposal
  • All promising proposals will be reviewed by Development and Administration
  • The ultimate approval of all exhibits in both Langson Library and the Science Library is made by the University Librarian

Exhibit Curation

  • An exhibit curator must be able to commit 6 months for planning curatorial work. In addition, the curator must attend the opening event (Langson Library exhibits), be available for private donor tours of the exhibit, and be available as necessary for media requests
  • When a proposal is chosen, it will be assigned an exhibition date. However, any exhibit can be postponed if strategic priorities or development needs of the Libraries require another exhibit to take place at that time
  • Communications and Events will provide editing assistance to ensure the final product reflects the Libraries’ commitment to providing accurate information
  • Design Services is responsible for exhibit design, production, and installation to ensure the final product properly reflects the Libraries’ brand

Langson Library Exhibits

  • Langson Library exhibits occur twice yearly –   spring and fall
  • These exhibits will have an opening event. The Development and Communications and Events staff will be heavily involved throughout the exhibit planning
  • Speakers for opening events should be compelling and able to reach a lay audience. Where available and appropriate, speakers should be chosen from among UCI faculty, and/or staff
  • Proposed speakers will be approved by the University Librarian. If an outside speaker is proposed, further review will be necessary

Science Library Exhibits

  • Science Library exhibits will occur no more than twice a year and will be timed so as not to conflict with the Langson Library exhibits installations and openings
  • The Science Library provides a place for creative exhibits that may reflect a librarian’s individual interests and areas of work, or broad themes on which they wish to present
  • Topics do not have to be specific to the sciences, but should highlight collections, partnerships, and other concepts that align with the mission, values, and strategic priorities of the Libraries
  • Collaborative proposals (teams, departments, committees) are encouraged
  • Communications and Events will provide support to publicize the exhibit to the UCI community as appropriate
  • Opening events supported by Development and Communications and Events will be determined on a case by case basis
