Location and Call Number Assignment

Material that does not have a pre-assigned location (see below for a list and description of pre-assigned locations) is cataloged either for Langson or for the Science Library depending the call number assigned by the cataloger according to the following flowchart:

Some material comes into the Cataloging Dept with a pre-assigned location, usually indicated by a flag. The locations below are the only ones to which material may be pre-assigned. If you receive material with a flag or other indication that it is to be cataloged for a location not listed below, bring it to your supervisor

PRE-ASSIGNED LOCATIONS

Archives: Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material

East Asian (stacks & reference): Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material

GML (Gruningen Medical Center -- stacks and reference): Assign only NLM numbers

Government Documents -- California Documents (including Internet & SRLF): Assign CaDoc numbers

Government Documents -- Federal Documents (including Internet & SRLF): Assign SuDoc numbers

Government Documents -- Local Documents: Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material

 

Internet Resources, except Federal and California documents: Assign only LC class numbers. Do not assign NLM even for medical material, but do not delete NLM numbers already present in the record.

Langson Library Reference: Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material

Langson Library Reserves (permanent reserves): Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material.

MRC (Media Resource Center), except Federal and California documents: Follow the flowchart above for call number assignment.

Science Library Reference: Follow the flowchart above for call number assignment.

Science Library Reserves (permanent reserves): Follow the flowchart above for call number assignment.

South East Asian Archives: Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material

Special Collections: Assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material; do not use cadocs numbers for call numbers (put cadoc numbers only in the government documents number field, tagged "g" in ANTPAC; do not use sudoc numbers

SRLF, except Federal and California documents: For material that does not already have a call number marked on it, assign only LC call numbers; do not use NLM even for medical material

UCI dissertations: Assign local numbers following the UCI dissertation cutter table .

NOTE: Federal and California documents are assigned SuDoc or CalDoc numbers as requested for specific Langson Reference sublocations (mlrrd & mlrac) and within the MRC.
